With the current economic climate I was wondering how it was going to work out in Antibes this season. Having asked a few people the general consensus is that those trying are getting work and those that aren’t, aren’t. Sounds normal, I’ll be off dockwalking tomorrow! Speaking to a Captain today he reckoned that about 95% of the boats where crewed, so not that many being ‘mothballed’. Finding a job as a full time job as a deckhand seems to be happening on the dock as opposed to the crew agent, with many boats saving on agency fees. Apparently there where thousands of crew here earlier in the season, forming queues around the block, so it seems now is the best time to be looking, at least, there’s less competition!! More to come…

Now a days there are countless, and I mean countless, different crew agencies to choose from. I have a bookmark folder and at least one spreadsheet document dedicated to them yet I still manage to be unsure which ones have what information. Do they have my new CV? Have I informed them that my french phone number has changed? Are they aware that I will be back in two weeks breathing down their necks? Have I uploaded my new picture?

This begs the question; Are there too many?

The problem is that every crew agent you sign up to deserves to know what you’re up to. Be it daywork, a temporary or full time position, they want your very latest CV, and they should have it. Their databases are being constantly combed by eagle eyed employers and only your best and most recent resumé will do.

So the more the merrier right? Well wrong.

The logistics of trying to keep 10 or so crew agents up to date is a lot harder than it seems, firstly, uploading 10 CV’s, on 10 different websites takes a measurable amount of time, definitely more than David Allen’s two minute rule will allow (click here to find out more about the two minute rule). Checking in with 10 crew agents the morning you get day-work (common courtesy to let them know you’re busy) can be quite a hassle; some like it done over the web, while others prefer a text or a phone call. This may all seem very straight forward, but on top of that you occasionally have to show your face, and pop in and see how things are going. I don’t know about you, but I certainly don’t plan on being free too many days during the week.

The catch 22 is that while you’re more likely to get a job out day working and meeting new people the crew agents need to be kept in the loop, and if they feel they’re not in it, they have a thousand and one other candidates who are making twice the effort.

My point is, should we sign up to every single crew agent we find in in the classified section of the yachting media, or should we maybe take five or so and concentrate our efforts on building good relationships with them? Choosing which ones you’ll run with is another subject altogether, in the mean time it would be interesting to know if anyone has adopted this strategy and how well it’s worked? Leave your comments and experiences below.

Now that I have completed my Dayskipper course I’m looking at where to go next. The obvious is Yachtmaster (commercially endorsed), which is on the cards once I have all the necessary miles in place. But in the current climate when captains and yacht owners are always looking for value for money, I think it would pay to ‘broaden’ our ‘deckie’ horizons and widen the blinkers; maybe enroll in an AEC course – the basic engineering course – or maybe become an RYA PWC or Powerboat Level II Instructor. These are especially helpful in the Mediterranean (I am not familiar with legislation in the States) as every tender/PWC operator needs an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) which is roughly equivalent to a powerboat level I. Having an instructor on board allows all the crew to become certified in their spare time and also guests if they wish to use the tender/jet-skis.
